June Thrift Challenge

June Thrift Challenge

Happy Thursday, friends! I am thrilled to be joining a talented group of friends this month in a thrift challenge. The goal is to find a secondhand item and transform it into something that fits into our home. Sometimes this requires a lot of work and sometimes just a bit. I really lucked out this month with not having to do too much work and I am completely in love with my find!

As soon as I saw this lamp, I knew I had to have it. I wasn’t sure what I would do with it or where I would put it, but I fell in love. The laurel wreath reliefs and all the detail just captured my heart immediately.

After a good cleaning, I painted the base with my favorite color, Champlain, by Fusion Mineral Paint. It’s a beautiful creamy white color without being too stark white or too yellow. Because it started so dark, I did use three coats. They went on easily and dried quickly. I used a small watercolor brush to really get into the nooks and crannies.

When the paint was mostly dry, I took a damp rag and very lightly distressed it. I wanted the distressing to highlight the detail of the wreaths. Using a damp rag to distress removes just a bit of paint without changing the integrity of the base like sanding sometimes can.

The final step in my makeover was finding a more modern lamp shade. The one that came with it was pretty, but the color was off and it was far too big for the space I wanted to use it in. I also like mixing styles and using a modern shade with clean lines would allow the detail of the lamp to take center stage.

Unfortunately, I never got a great photo during the day, but I love the romantic feel of this lamp in the evenings.

My favorite thing about this lamp is that is has this beautiful detailing on all four sides, so it can be seen no matter what side of the room you are on. This is the view we see when we come up the stairs into the den where I ended up placing it. It makes me smile every time.
